About This Workshop

CASBA's annual West Coast Natural Building Conference provides members and followers from around the state (and the country!) a unique opportunity to come together to learn, to share, and to meet other members of the ever-expanding straw and natural building community. In 2025 we are returning to the pastoral setting of Walker Creek Ranch Conference Center in Marin County. We hope to see you there!

The materials we work with bring many wonderful communities together and their number continues to grow. We will spend the weekend reconnecting and renewing community, making new friends, and talking a lot about all the aspects of working with straw and other natural, bio-based materials in the built environment. Topics will include: collaborations and strategies to scale straw construction how to use natural materials to contribute to fire rebuilds; constructing a natural materials rebuilding toolkit farmers, and growing our supply network nuts & bolts issues in construction code updates and more! Activities will include: hands-on demos with opportunities to get your hands dirty community presentations on all sorts of fun projects 5x5s and 20x20s: Attendees are invited to share digital images during these popular evening slide shows to let us know who you are and what you do - or to show us your latest project! Limited to 25 presentations accepted for the weekend, they can be 5 images in 5 minutes, or 20 images at 20 seconds or less each (6 minutes). Miles Taylor

Miles, a native of rural Virginia, earned his BA in Non-Fiction Writing and Editing from George Mason University in 2007. Migrating westward after graduation, Santa Cruz, California, became home in 2009. After years in the trades he discovered a passion for Natural Building and Permaculture Design. In 2014, he partnered with Katrina Rozelle to establish Muddbums and now is a team member with Buckeye Natural Builders and an instructor for the California Strawbale Building Association to provide sustainable, bio-based building solutions along the West Coast.
